Q: Can I use Protector2 on Windows XP (or 2000)?
A: No, Protector2 will only work on Windows 95, 98 and ME. The architecture of Windows XP and 2000 is completely different environment.

Q: Can I disallow the use of certain .exe files?
A: Yes. You can disable all programs except allowed in the Programs window under User Account. You can also disable any particular file by setting NO (None) access right for the file.

Q: What additional features are available with the purchase version of the program?
A: You will be able to create much more user accounts and set more user rights for each. You will also get rid of the trial reminders. See Pricing for more information.

Q: I cannot run programs that used to run in dos mode.
A: Old MS-DOS programs require at least RW (Read-Write) access. By default, if you do not set any right, Protector2 assumes Read only right. To solve this problem, give all authorized users RW access rights for all DOS programs, which they should be able to run. Also make sure DOS programs are not disabled in User settings - Advanced - Software.

Q: Can Protector2 protect specific individual keys or values from the registry?
A: No; current version of Protector2 protects only certain registry items related to security. These items are mostly Windows policy settings, which define for example access to Control panels, running of registry tools and so on.

Q: Protector2 will not let me access my computer. What can I do?
Q: What if I forget the password
?
A: If you have forgotten administrator password or you are not sure what to do, please download the User's guide and see Emergency procedures for step-by-step instructions how to access your computer.

Q: How can I buy Protector2?
A: You can buy online or send a check. Please see the Pricing page or "Why and how to register" in Protector's help file.

Q: What if I boot the computer from a floppy disk, can Protector2 handle this?
A: Protector2 protects your computer only in Windows mode. To prevent booting up from a floppy disk, you will need to change "Boot order" option in your computer's Setup (BIOS) to C:\,A:\.  Of course it is also necessary to protect access to system BIOS by password. Note that this does not mean that you would have to enter password each time the computer is turned on. The password is only required to access computer Setup (BIOS).
Booting from a floppy provides a "back door" to your computer in case you forget administrators password. (provided you do not forget the BIOS password as well)

Q: Does Protector2 protect the computer in Safe mode?
A: No, Protector2 works only in "normal" Windows mode. Starting the computer in Safe mode can be disabled in Preferences -> Security. It is automatically disabled when you switch to medium or high security mode. For first few days it is recommended to leave Safe mode enabled as a "back door".
